Gay Art Painting of a Bearded Red Haired Muscular Gay Bear against a Vivid Green Heavily Textured Background by Kenney Mencher

The color scheme of this work is based on a warm/cool relationship. The theory is that warm colors, such as oranges and yellows appear to project forward when placed against the contrast of a cool color (colors that share blue.)

I try to create a more interesting composition by having the focal point (the head) placed in the right third of the picture and try to heighten this asymmetrical composition by having the figure look at the viewer. The line from the head down the shoulder is designed to create a strong diagonal running towards the lower corner of the picture.

The paint is applied in thick layers (artists use the Italian term "impasto" translates to the English word "paste.) The textures of the paint vary across the painting. The background is troweled on with knives and scrapers while the figure's paint texture shows the stiff bristle brushes. The textures of the figures are designed to follow the directions of the muscles and planes of the body.

The subject matter of most of my paintings deals with thicker middle aged me often referred to as bears. I'm trying to represent the beauty of older hyper masculine men who often get overlooked by our more youth oriented culture.

Because this is on gallery wrapped extra heavy stretcher bars you won't need to frame this painting. (See the detail photo of the back and sides of the painting.)
