You may recognize the model for this painting who is the Instagram sensation ready_w_red.

I think that I was attracted to his monumentality and self possession. He is large hairy heroic male who is rejoicing in his masculinity and power. He almost reminds me of some of the classical sculptures that represent Greek heroes like Hercules. The pose also reminded me of some of the relief sculptures from Greek and Roman buildings. Especially those off of the Parthenon that show the Battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs. (I'm a bit of an art history geek so bare (bear) with me here. BTW I was a professor of art history for nearly thirty years. The figure and his anatomy also allows me to work with the paint in an almost sculptural way.

The paint is applied in thick impastos. (An Italian word for “mixture,” used to describe a painting technique wherein paint is thickly laid on a surface, so that brushstrokes or palette knife marks are visible.) I wanted the paint and the textures to feel tangible, almost like a skin.

In the studio shots you see a smaller version of the painting which is already sold (sorry). There is also a small preliminary drawing of this one available of the same subject here.

This is on gallery stretched canvas which means it is stapled on the back and the canvas wraps around the sides.

You won't need to frame this painting because the edges of the canvas are wrapped with canvas and are 2-3/8" deep (see one of the photo of the back and edge above.) The canvases themselves are a work of art and really well constructed.

Lately there have been some fake websites springing up and stealing my images and publishing them but then not shipping the art to my collectors so please only use the following sites to collect my work.
