My drawing Kouros is a 9x12-inch piece created with lightfast black crayon on Rives BFK, a high-quality cotton paper commonly used for printmaking. The surface of this paper is thick and durable, making it well-suited for crayon, which is less prone to smudging than pencil or charcoal. The drawing depicts a young, muscular male figure seen from behind, emphasizing the structure of his back and lower body. The pose is slightly asymmetrical, and the composition is cropped, with elements touching the edges of the paper to create a more dynamic arrangement. I used the rule of thirds, a compositional guideline that places key elements along imaginary grid lines to create balance and movement within the frame.

This piece is part of my ongoing exploration of the classical male form. The title Kouros refers to the ancient Greek sculptures of idealized young men, often depicted in strong, upright poses. While my drawing is more gestural than those rigid marble figures, it still references the same tradition of celebrating physicality and structure. By using crayon instead of graphite or charcoal, I create a more permanent and durable image that holds up well over time, even during handling or shipping.

Drawing has always been central to my practice, both as a foundation for painting and as a way to experiment with composition, form, and technique. In this drawing, I played with placement and framing by shifting the subject toward the edges rather than keeping him centered. This approach creates a sense of movement and engagement with the space around him. Working on a high-quality cotton paper like Rives BFK adds another layer to the experience, as its texture interacts with the crayon to produce subtle variations in tone and depth.

This piece, like many of my works, is about more than just technical execution—it reflects my interest in exploring different ways to represent the human figure while drawing from both historical references and personal experience.
