Sometimes I just like to draw as a means of escape and to study or explore something that I don't have the time for in a painting. It's a sort freer kind of medium because if it doesn't work out it's not the same kind of investment as an oil painting. I also like to learn more about anatomy by drawing. I feel like I never can stop studying.
Another nice thing about drawing is that it's so immediate but you can also incorporate some elements into it that are similar to the brush marks or brushwork in painting. For example, the direction of the marks and hatch marks in this drawing correlate somewhat to the direction and textures that I would incorporate while painting this scene as an oil. As in most of my paintings, I try to avoid an uninteresting composition and in this instance I attempted to create a kind of "L" shape that's a bit asymmetrical and also creates a sort of diagonal from the upper left-hand corner to the lower right hand corner.
Some things to know about this drawing is that it's made on super heavy cotton fiber paper which is called Rives BFK. It's actually a printmaking paper that I like to work on because it's so thick and yummy. The pencil or graphite that I use is a very soft variety and allows me to get some sort of velvety tones and do some nice mark making as well as blending with it. Avoid getting this drawing near water because it's actually made with its called a water-soluble graphite, that when you apply water to the surface of it it will dissolve the pencil.
