There's a kind of physicality to painting with oils that allows me match the thick, heavily layered brush work and troweled on grungy paint to the thick rough masculine qualities of gay men who call themselves bears.
I love painting hairy bears! The ultra masculine, stubbly, muscled and gruff and grizzly bearish the better! This gentleman probably isn't gentle but he is all MAN. This original painting is designed to compliment his rough masculine hairy body. I've cropped down on to the figure so that the most compelling, interesting or appealing elements are highlighted: his beard, shoulder and chest hair. I've also made the figure kiss the edges of the composition to make it more active. I liked the way the head flowed into the shoulders making a kind of diagonal in the composition.
In particular I try to approach painting in several ways, I want the drawing skills, color, and anatomy to be accurate but I also try to make the compositions more interesting by avoiding a “bull’s eye” (symmetrical) composition in favor of a more exciting slightly off center or “asymmetrical” composition.
I use a compositional device called the "rule of thirds." The rule of thirds is a guideline for both artists and photographers. It says that if you divide your composition into thirds, either vertically or horizontally, and then place focal areas of your scene at the meeting points of them, you will get a more pleasing arrangement and layout for your compositions.
This painting was done in the "alla prima" method. The alla prima is an Italian phrase that means 'at first attempt'. It refers to a wet-on-wet approach whereby wet paint is applied to previous layers of still-wet paint, often in a single sitting. Over the years, the technique has been adopted and adapted by artists from Van Gogh to Velázquez.
This painting is done on a canvas panel that has a archival cardboard center with canvas glued to it. The size is actually very easy to find an inexpensive frame for if you look either here on Etsy or on some other venues. Just look for a framing kit with an open back frame and you can snap this right into the frame and it will only probably cost you 20 or $30.

Started purchasing some stuff for the place I was going to move into and today I received one of the packages. It contained a piece of art that I really wanted but couldn't afford to pay the price originally presented. After I asked if he would consider lowering it, I let him know that I didn't want to overstep my boundaries or offend him as an artist, just that I really loved his work altogether and figured it was worth a shot. He was quick to reply, very understanding, and didn't hesitate to compromise. He also put the item on hold just for me. I had gone through his shop and favorited a few different things, too. Well, I opened the package up and found the painting I had bought (bottom left) along with a handwritten letter, another painting he seen I was interested in, and some personal cards that he designed. I am happy owner of Kenny Mencher's art now. Like you, I hope, I love browsing here through his beautiful drawings and paintings.. but! doesn't matter how big is computer screen and resolutions - nothing can compare to have it in front of you, alive.. These thick masterful brush strokes, vibrant colors - they change as day lights change, it \"talks\" to you depending on what mood you are in.. This piece of art reminds me French movies - something free and independent in look of this man.. he also reminds me a picture of my father from 60s.. Two thumbs up! all 5 stars! What an awesome collection of drawings! These 4 drawings were in a heavy plastic bag for protection and they are beautiful. Kenney also included several extra pieces which was such a thrill! I am happy owner of Kenny Mencher's art now. Like you, I hope, I love browsing here through his beautiful drawings and paintings.. but! doesn't matter how big is computer screen and resolutions - nothing can compare to have it in front of you, alive.. These thick masterful brush strokes, vibrant colors - they change as day lights change, it \"talks\" to you depending on what mood you are in.. This piece of art reminds me French movies - something free and independent in look of this man.. he also reminds me a picture of my father from 60s.. Two thumbs up! all 5 stars! Carefully packaged and shipped as explained. I am targeting more art pieces from Kenny, and I need to hurry ;) - they are going fast. Alek.

What an awesome collection of drawings! These 4 drawings were in a heavy plastic bag for protection and they are beautiful. Kenney also included several extra pieces which was such a thrill! It is always a treat to receive a piece by Kenney! Extremely well packed, condition great and very quick ship! As all of us who owns his art knows, a wonderful vendor with great art and a generous heart! Highly recommend!

Amazing colours! Normally I'm into bears, but the colours in this painting are so bright and vivid, that I now fell in love with this younger model ;-). I had to buy it and its even brighter in real.
